Liberty National

This beautiful course located across the Hudson River is rumored to be the most expensive course ever constructed.  The site used to be a water way and nearly all land and trees on the property were brought in for the express desire of having a worldclass golf course so close to Manhattan.

Over the years I have heard mixed reviews of the course so I wasn’t sure what to expect.  To my pleasant surprise I was quite astonished by the club and the course and would eagerly play again if the opportunity arose.

First of all, the views of lower Manhattan on a clear day (like we had) are breathtaking.  Starting off the day on the driving range (we were on the “backside” of the range) you are looking straight out at the Freedom Tower and all its glory.

The clubhouse is modern and elegant and not surprisingly the food and service top-notch.

I thought the course was very playable and fun.  My friend (who did wear a hat that said “Chasing Birdies”) got three out on the course (and he is a low double digit handicapper).

I can’t think of another course Tom Kite has designed (and was surprised he was the designer frankly) but he did an awesome job with the routing and variability of the holes.

The 12th hole par three ranks as one of the best views in golf with unobstructed panoramic views of all lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. I think this single hole may slow the round down by 10-15 minutes as each group stopped and took photos.  It is a cute short par three which was fun.

Great day and here are the photos including some with Jimmie James (see:
